Bon Appetite

A few nights ago we watched Julie and Julia, and decided the next day we were going to make one of Julia Child's recipes from her famous Mastering the Art of French Cooking. So, as I am currently visiting "The Bay State", we decided to make her Lobster Thermidor (Homard Thermidor), aka the most complicated lobster dish I have ever made. We must have used every pot and pan in the house for this one dish, and I must say, it was something special. Our hard work really did pay off, because it was simply delightful. The picture does not do the dish justice, because instead of stuffing the lobster/sauce mixture back into the shell, we heaped it on top of a piece of sourdough bread. Mmmm.
Here is what we steamed the lobsters in: onion, carrot, celery, wine, water, bay leaf, thyme, peppercorns, parsley. After the lobster was cooked, this stock was used as the base for the sauce, which started as a rich roux of lots of butter and flour.

Hanukkah in the City

Well, Christmastime in the city really is all that they make it out to be. We had our annual Hanukkah the morning after Christmas and it was a huge success. On the menu was Dadie's famous egg salad, pigs and blankets, mushroom and onion turnovers, corn pie, challah, salami and mustard, and an assortment of cheeses and wine. A very typically Perlov menu.

Ketchup

Recently I have been neglecting this blog space, and there is no time like the present to catch up. And obviously, there is no time like the present because this is clearly a procrastination tool. Either that or a well deserved break.

Because of my allergies to Joey the Cat, time spent at Kat's house is rare. A few weeks ago however we spent a lovely day there, consisting primarily of my favorite activity: consumption. Her mom whipped up some pumpkin ravioli upon our arrival, and just a few hours later made eggplant parmesan from scratch. Here are some long lost photos of the event.

monday, one day. tuesday, two day. wednesday, huh what day?

ran into the filming of ugly betty on my way home from school. recently i have run into a lot of annoying filming sessions that force me to wait 10 minutes before i can cross the street, or be yelled at by some production assistant after obliviously walking through their shot. today though, i stopped and watched (and even took a video), and was able to see america and her costar share a kiss! exciting.

also, ive been cooking after long library days to boost my spirit, so tonight i made salmon pasta with arugula and basil. it was delicious.

a hearty dinner tonight:
roasted chicken, potatoes and parsnips with olive oil and rosemary, garlic rice and a red wine sauce.

marathon weekend

what a treat to have lu here this weekend! luckily she had a disposable camera with her, because this is basically the only picture i got. notice the beer choice for the three of us... typical. some highlights: mack's 102.4 fever (not-so-good "highlight"/quarantine), soba soup with ny slice for dessert, 2 am times square (bright lights), david's chicken cutlets with applesauce, good music and good company dinner party, black and red caviar, loft party, old friends run-ins, 5 am chats, sarabeth's with ronnie, RACE on broadway.

1 1/2 c. grated italian fontina

lots of salt and pepper

1 c. cooked risotto rice
panko bread crumbs

mix rice with first ingredients, chill for a while in the fridge (up to 2 hours) so the mixture hardens a little. bread with the panko and cook 3 minutes each side in oil. enjoy!
