red lentil soup

adapted from my mom's recipe:

saute 1 onion, 2 celery sticks, 1 carrot, 2 cloves garlic in olive oil until slightly soft. add cumin, thyme, garam masala, and chili powder (amounts from most to least). cook spices for a few minutes, add about 1 tbs tomato paste and cook another few minutes. add about 5 cups hot stock, mix in 1 cup red lentils. simmer for about 20 minutes or until lentils are cooked. salt and pepper. emulsify and serve with lots of lemon juice, and shredded cheddar cheese.

saturday felt like the beginning of spring-- post welcome brunch, brooke and luna celebrated by dancing on the roof. cheers to springtime in new york, coming soon.

egg salad inspired by dadie

dadie and norm are far far away in tucson arizona for the winter, and i am very much missing them and their cooking. dadie usually makes this great egg salad for family brunches, so i decided to try it myself: hard boil 2 eggs (8 minutes in boiling water), chop finely and mix together with fage yogurt, grainy dijon mustard, lemon juice, cumin, chopped scallion, salt and pepper.
